Sad Music and Cognitive Reappraisal

An empirical study looking at the effects of music valence on the effectiveness of a brief cognitive intervention: Cognitive reappraisal has been shown to be an effective method for improving mood. In this study, we demonstrated that accompanying such an intervention with happy and/or sad music had no bearing on mood improvements. In short, this means that individuals needing to improve their mood could feasibly maintain their music preference (even if it is sad) as long as they engage with cognitive reappraisal, even if done briefly.
Sad States Review

A literature review analysing the experiences of sadness after listening to sad music. In this paper, a new classification of sad states is proposed, suggesting a more complex yet comprehensive understanding of sadness.
